The USS Midway was a US Navy aircraft carrier, now retired and transformed into a floating museum, located at 910 North Harbor Drive in San Diego. It holds the distinction of having served for almost fifty years, the longest for any aircraft carrier in service throughout the twentieth century. The carrier was commissioned towards the end of the Second World War and served through and after the end of the Cold War era till 1992. USS Midway has been home to around two hundred thousand sailors during its lifetime in service and has been witness to innumerable breakthroughs in the history of naval aviation. It has also served in various humanitarian missions.

USS Midway Museum was officially opened in June 2004. Today, it draws around a million visitors every year. It is the most popular naval warship turned museum in the country. The museum hosts a plethora of events throughout the year including field trips for school students and overnight programs for children. While you can always attend one of the events open to the public or sign up for special tours, the self-guided audio tour is a pretty solid experience. You would actually get to experience life on the USS Midway Museum in San Diego. The tour is guided and narrated by former sailors. You would get to explore over sixty locations aboard the carrier including the engine room, bridge, galley, sleeping quarters, post office, brig, pilots’ ready rooms, primary flight control, officers quarters, cockpits and more.

The Midway screens short films, there are flight simulators you could try, and the interactive exhibits are equally thrilling for the young and the old. You can visit USS Midway Museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. but be sure to secure admission by 4 p.m. The museum is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and other days when there may be scheduled upkeep. Admission for adults is $20, for seniors is $17, for students is $15 and for military members is $10. Kids aged six to twelve are charged $10 and younger children get free admission.
